New Yoga Studio Review: YogaWorks Chestnut Hill

I'm a big fan of yoga but I especially love it in the winter. Stretching in a warm studio, feeling that burn, and the strong sense of zen left after a quality class is especially appreciated this time of year. With a new YogaWorks location opening at Chestnut Hill, I was invited to their opening weekend to try out a class. I picked a Vinyasa Flow class taught by Alissa Portet.
The new space is located downstairs in a large building and it feels cozy and welcoming when you walk in. The class was packed for a cold Superbowl Sunday but I grabbed a spot and they didn't run out of mats or props. Alissa led a nice, energizing flow and I found her cues particularly specific and helpful. Muscles I didn't even realize I had were burning in no time.
After the class I checked out some awesome vendors they had in the lobby in celebration of opening weekend including a Juice Press, Dosha Bar, and Health Ade - the best kombucha I've ever tried.

With the classes and workshops being offered in addition to the friendly staff and knowledgable teachers, I think this studio will be a welcome addition to the Chestnut Hill area. Check it out and let me know what you think!
Have you tried any cool new studios lately? Let me know in the comments, I'd love to hear about them!

Brunch + Burn with Trillfit (@makeittrill)

In January I was invited to check out a fitness event that sounded just too good to turn down - a wellness day party (or "Brunch + Burn") with TRILLFIT, a new workout party popping up all over Boston, created by Heather White and DJ Nick Bishop. The event was held on Sunday Jan 31 at the Hotel Commonwealth and featured a yoga class, a hip-hop inspired signature workout, and then brunch! Plus a few extra goodies like beauty treatments, health consultations, and of course a photo booth. How fun does that sound?!
The yoga class was lead by Sanaa Jaman (aka @LadyDork) and was a perfect combination of relaxing and invigorating. Her cues were helpful and the poses were challenging without being too strenuous. After yoga, we did the signature workout which was basically one big dance party (and made me miss the Zumba classes I used to take in the North End!). The class was taught by professional dancer Melisa Valdez whose energy was totally infectious. I loved the music too (a big focus of Trillfit) which made it even better. Workouts that are hard, sweaty AND fun are the best, am I right?
After getting our sweat on we were treated to an awesome brunch including different juices, fruit, a trail mix bar, and these awesome gruyere egg sandwiches. Yum! Oh and on the way out we got some cool swag in gift bags. Overall, it was an extremely well-produced event and fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning. I highly recommend checking out the next Trillfit event! Details on their website or contact Heather for more info - info@trill.fit.

Have you tried any new classes lately?

#Instagram Round-up: October 2015

So many awesome shoots this month mixed in with some family travel (a cousin wedding in Indiana) and of course a beagle photo or two. After the bad weather earlier in the month cleared up, October turned out to be pretty gorgeous! So far, November has been pretty stunning as well. Knock on wood, we're all enjoying it while it lasts...

#Instagram Round-up: June 2015

In June I really amped up my fitness game for the Cohasset Tri and also just because it was so damn nice out! Lots of running, biking, long walks with the dog, and general outdoor living. I could get used to this! I also had an awesome time photographing the super duo Caroline Earle and Laura Mucci at the beginning of the month, travelled to Martha's Vineyard to photograph a yoga retreat, and even fit in a pop-up photo shoot at Castle Island with patientMoon (we're doing another this month- details here!). Even with the disappointment of the Tri being rained out, the majority of June was a blast and July is shaping up to be awesome too.

What have you been doing outside this summer?

Instagram Round-up for February AND #DYOT Book Giveaway Winner

And now... my Instagram re-cap. February was a hard month around these parts. So much snow, cold, disabled trains, traffic... you get the idea. But there was some fun stuff too like photographing some really incredible runners for my Boston Marathon project, snowshoeing with my brother, photographing at East Side Yoga and Fitness studio in Southie, testing with Madison Claire Fitness (more on that down the road!) and getting my first promo mailing of the year designed, packaged and out the door. Whew!
And now... thanks to everyone to entered the giveaway to win "Do Your Om Thing" by Rebecca Pacheco. The winner by random drawing is.... Sharon D.! Congrats Sharon, I think you will really love reading it.

Behind the Scenes: An Interview with OmGal, Rebecca Pacheco

I'm so psyched to post a special interview with a special person on my blog today. Meet Rebecca Pacheco - aka OmGal - yoga enthusiast and now a published author. I met Rebecca last year when she participated in my "Why I Run" Boston Marathon project and we stayed in touch. When she told me she was writing a book and asked me to shoot the headshot for the inside of the book jacket, I was beyond thrilled.
Here's my interview with Rebecca (who has been kind enough to do a book giveaway! Deets at the end of the interview):

Hi Rebecca! Tell us a little about yourself: If my life in yoga years were a person, she’d be able to vote! I began doing yoga at the age of 16. In addition to teaching yoga, I’ve also worked with at-risk youth at a nonprofit in Dorchester, in marketing at a magazine, and as a consultant. I’m now a solopreneuer (like you, Lucie). Which means we are the bosses… and the assistants… and the janitors. My first book comes out on March 3. It’s pretty surreal. Writing a book has been a lifelong dream (I majored in English Literature). Yoga became the medium through which I write and tell stories.

Tell us about your new book: It’s less of the fitness and flexibility we all know so well about yoga and more of the tradition’s meaning and philosophy, yet made modern and relatable to life for the modern yogi.
What did you hope to bring to the community (or world?) with this book: The world doesn’t need another idealized image of yoga. My goal was to be real and give people a better understanding of how yoga applies to real life. I wanted to give the world a yoga book that they would actually read. I also really hope it makes people laugh. Humor is high art to me.

What was the writing experience like? Would you ever consider doing it again? I have always thought of myself as a writer. The experience was hard, stressful, and painstaking at times. Even friends who are both mothers and published authors will say that it’s like childbirth (I’ll have to keep you posted for when I do have a child!). But writing is what I was meant to do. I was the kid who got busted for staying up past my bedtime reading with a flashlight under the covers. The level of difficulty in writing a book and making a living as a professional writer have never dissuaded me, so, yes, I plan to do it again. I have conceptualized three future books in my mind. One of them I’ve started writing loosely. I hope to bring that one to fruition soon. It will incorporate an athletic inspiration to my approach to yoga.

Are you planning any events around your big launch? I am! Right now, we have book tour events confirmed in Boston, Western MA, Rhode Island, Washington DC, and the Cape & Islands. There are other cities in the works, so please stay tuned!

Where can we find "Do Your Om Thing?" You can order it on Amazon now or buy it in bookstores after 3/3/15. If you’re in Boston, definitely come to two of the best indie bookstores on earth in the Brookline Booksmith on March 4th and Trident Booksellers on March 9th. They are seriously two of my favorite places in the city. I can’t wait to see everyone there and write some love notes to readers, students, and friends on the title pages of some books.
Thanks Rebecca and congratulations!!!

Happy 2015! and December #Instagram Round-up

I took a much needed work break over the holidays, opting to leave my laptop at home while visiting family in New England and the Midwest. It felt good but now I'm happy to be back and looking forward to a productive 2015!

Here's what December looked like on Instagram:
Special thanks to Hub Health for putting my Instagram account on their "13 Local Instagram Accounts You Should Be Following Now!"

Hope you had a wonderful holiday season! What are you plans for 2015?

Instagram Round-Up: Fall

It's been a while since I did one of these, huh?! Here's a sampling of what's been going on around here this fall- porch decorating, Halloweening, figuring out how to work the heating system in the new house, photo shootin', farm-to-table dinners, beach walks, Indian summer days, cheering at the New York City Marathon, etc. Looking forward to what the rest of the season brings!

How has your fall been so far?

Barre & Soul's New Locations

Last winter I did a shoot at Andrea Lucas's new venture- a studio in Melrose, MA. She wanted some shots of the yoga classes they teach and the studio's instructors as well as some details of the new space.
Good news for people in NH and the North Shore: the Melrose one was such a success that she's opening another studio! This one is in Portsmouth, NH and from what I've seen on Facebook it is gorgeous. They're located at 163 Court Street and just opened in August.
For more information on this locations and their others, visit their website or email at nh@barresoul.com. Tell them I sent you! :)

Fitness in Boston: Summer Started with a Bang!

Whew! It's been a while since I blogged- summer started fast and furious, I've just been trying to keep up! Here's a little glimpse of what I've been up to-

A few fantastic photo shoots with some seriously beautiful ladies-

Danielle Roback, owner of Studio Poise
Christine Sordillo, fitness competitor
Joanna Benevides, yoga beauty
and even a fun test shoot with my pal Ali Baldassare of Move Sweat Love and make-up artist Sadie Higgins.

I also had a major shoot in collaboration with patientMoon at Vo2max Fitness and Vo2max Elite in Needham (photos are not up yet- stay tuned!). We were shooting not only their studios but all 20+ instructors and it was a blast! I loved working with these fitness stars, they were total pros. More on that in another post...
I also spent a day at the 2nd Annual NEWBHA Fest run by the North End Health and Beauty Alliance where I was also photographing the event - lots of bands, free fitness classes, and health and beauty vendors. It was a gorgeous day to spend outside!

On top of all this (which took place in the span of one month) I've also had some exciting personal developments occur! That is another blog post entirely so stay tuned... :)

How have you been spending your summer so far??

New! Fitness Photography + Web Design

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have already seen this but I wanted to announce it on the blog here too! I've recently partnered with the fantastic team at patientMoon Web Design to offer a new service to our friends in the fitness industry. We've created three packages to help individual instructors and trainers market themselves; each package offers a variety of services but all three include a brand new website and a photo session with me! Sweet!

We designed these packages with busy fitness professionals in mind- we take care of your website and photos, you focus on your teaching and training. Sounds pretty good, right?

If you're ready for more info, just visit our website or send me an email with any questions or comments you have. I'd love to hear from you!

Instagram Round-up: February

And what a long cold month it was! The freezing temps and snow were clearly reflected in my posts for February, there was just no letting up. As much as I dislike the cold, it can be beautiful sometimes! I've also been pretty busy photographing fitness instructors and marathon runners too. Looking forward to some warmer posts soon, how have you been distracting yourself from the cold this winter?!

Yoga and Dance Photography in Boston: Erica Bornstein

I started a wish list on Pinterest of yoga poses I thought were cool and would love to shoot someday. Without even knowing this, yoga and Zumba instructor Erica (who teaches at Sweat & Soul Yoga, Back Bay Yoga, and Soul.Train) showed up to our shoot and nailed most of them! This girl has some serious skills, both on a yoga mat and in the dance studio:

Thanks again Erica, you were a pleasure to work with!!!

Yoga Photography: Jacqui

I was so happy when Jacqui said she wanted to do our yoga shoot at the Arnold Arboretum, one of my favorite places since childhood AND just an overall fantastic place to for photos. Jacqui is a yoga and Pilates instructor and she was very interested in a shoot that had a nature element to it. The arbs was the perfect place and we agreed that shooting in the evening was the perfect time:
Thanks again Jacqui!

Yoga Photography: Jessica

Meet Jess! Jess is a yoga instructor (with a serious interest in fashion!). When she hired stylist Keely Witkoski to help create a look for our shoot and Keely took one look at her closet, she knew fashion had to be incorporated into the yoga theme. Here's what we created with this in mind:

Such a fun shoot! Thanks again Jess!
