Sunny at Sowa on 10/10/10

The show yesterday at Sowa went off virtually without a hitch. 14 of us from Boston Handmade were there and ready to show off our goods, plus we had the most perfect weather you can possibly get! I left it up to others to take pictures and fortunately a bunch of people did, including Chris (who created/runs Sowa) who took this nice shot of me and Arthur (he has more pics from the show here). Thanks to everyone who came out to visit us and show their support!

As great a day as it was, it totally wiped me out. Catching up on sleep tonight; tomorrow I will post pics from the awesome couples portrait shoot I did on Saturday.

I hope those lucky enough to have today off are enjoying the holiday!

Yay! Boston Handmade at Sowa THIS Sunday!

This Sunday! Boston Handmade will be descending on Sowa Open Market for a full day of showing and selling all of our handmade goods. This is the little icon for Sunday's forecast (according to NOAA) and it's pretty much the best icon you can possibly see as far as weather goes:Our event happens to fall on the same day as Dogtoberfest which apparently involves stupid pet & human tricks and is therefore awesome:

We'll be at 460 Harrison Ave in the South End from 10am to 4pm. For more info and to rsvp, please go to our event page on Facebook, hope to see you there!

Spring Happenings in Boston and Online

A few new things I just wanted to mention with the help of some bullet points:
  • I will be at Sowa Open Market this weekend, both days, for their opening weekend. This year there are a few other incentives to stop by- the brand new Sowa Vintage Market and the annual Sowa Art Walk. All within the same couple of blocks! You may have to come both days just to see it all...
  • My friend and fellow BH member, Chris O'Brien, started a blog recently called Digital Mixed. It's a fantastic resource for digital mixed media artists or those interested in mixed media behind-the-scenes. Now I don't have to constantly bug her with my "how did you do that?" questions! Which she was always happy to answer, I should add. :)

Last One! I Swear

Ahhh that last show of the year, a mixture of excitement and relief. This is the big one so it's only appropriate that it is my last; hopefully I can go out with a BANG! Then I will go back to posting all kind of interesting things on here, I promise.

Has it really been a year already? Apparently so! This weekend is the 6th Annual Sowa Holiday Market and once again several Boston Handmade members and I will be selling our goods for the two day show-

Bumble Belly Designs
Chroma Lab
Lucie Wicker Photography
Stonehouse Studio
The Art and Craft of Mimi Kirchner
Vintage by Crystal

We will be there Sat & Sun from 11am to 6pm along with another 80+ amazing artists and craftsmen. Need directions? Click here!

Halloweened at Sowa Open Market

Wow, what a crazy day. We all seriously lucked out with the weather- cool and sunny all day, perfect for an outdoor market. The decorations and costumes were amazing and the crowd was having as much fun with it as the vendors.

Purely by coincidence my booth was right next to a vendor, Nate of Hijacked Ceramics, who was dressed as a blue-ish zombie in a tuxedo with a blue shirt. The whole day people were asking if we'd planned our costumes together (we did not) and taking our pictures. We were like undead celebrities.
He actually made the worms crawling out of his face himself out of Femo clay.

This was my other undead neighbor, Shara, of Shara Porter. Great zombie look.

The Corpse Bride

I didn't win the costume contest (although I did make the top ten!) but the winners were definitely deserving. The vendor contest winner was Lego Batman (Jen of Zooguu) and the customer contest winner was the zombie impaled by a traffic cone. Brilliant.

If you want to see more photos, go to the Open Market Flickr page, there are a lot more that are worth a look!

Market of the Living Dead

Oh man, I just got an email from Sowa and I just had to post it here. This Sunday is the final market of the season and also a huge Halloween extravaganza. Not only will there be a big costume contest with prizes (and a pumpkin carving contest) but the {NewNew} will be up from NYC!
I will also be there and yes, I will be all decked out in a freaky and bizarre-o costume, don't you worry.

AFAS Pumkin, Gourde and Fruit Carving Contest
The Gaslight Grill will be hosting a fruit and veggie carving contest on their patio sponsored by AFAS. The event is open to the public carving and begins at 11AM, judging at 4PM. The farmers market will have tons of fresh gourdes, pumpkins and fruits dying to be cut.

Pumpkin Carver Extraordinaire, Travis Reckner!
Travis Reckner from the Roger Williams Zoo will be displaying some of his renowned carved pumpkins and doing demos outside of Rooca Restaurant starting at 1PM, next to the Sowa Produce Market at 500 Harrison Ave.

It's Open Season

I enjoyed this past weekend as it was my last free one for a while! And by "enjoyed" I mean matted and framed prints all day Sunday. It was nice to be busy after a one month break from shows, I have to admit. Here's what I've got coming up:

South End Open Studios
Saturday, September 19 & Sunday, September 20
540 Harrison Ave
South End, 02118
10am to 5pm

Jamaica Plain Open Studios
19 Eliot St
Jamaica Plain, 02130
11am to 6pm

I've got a lot of new things to share so stop by!

Where's Pam?

Last week I was at Sowa, suffering in the rain and getting blown in the wind. This past Sunday looked only slightly better so I was glad to stay at home and hoped the rain held off for the vendors I knew who were there.

I found out later in the day from Marla (Seaglass Things) that not only did they not get rained on but John Krasinksi (Jim from "the Office") came to shop along with actress Emily Blunt (from "the Devil Wears Prada"). I was there the past two Sundays and they picked this one to visit! Damn!

Fortunately they were captured by a Sowa paparazzo-

"Jim" and his Dad

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt

Thanks to Sowa for posting these to their Flickr site and for creating an awesome market that draws a celeb-studded crowd!

Rain Rain Go Away

"Morning Pink"
While I normally am happy to curl up with a Sox game and my dog on a rainy day, I'm hoping it gives us a break for Sunday. I will be back at Sowa from 10am - 4pm, a few hours without rain isn't too much to ask right?! If you feel like venturing out, please stop by, I'd love to see you!
540 Harrison Ave
Boston (South End), MA
10am to 4pm
Free parking!

Whew!

What a fun weekend! Saturday was wonderful- the weather, the crowd, the sales, I really had a great day overall. It rained during set-up on Sunday which was pretty miserable but fortunately it had cleared up by 10am and the crowds were not deterred.

I also made some new friends (one of the reasons I love Sowa!)-

Jill from Flour Girls
(what desserts!!! being next to her for a whole day was deadly...in a good way)

Aaron from Monkey Chow
(crazy & colorful illustrations, I'm partial to the whale and also the lion)

The guys from Boston Coasters/Ward Maps
(Their map and photo products were flying off the shelves all weekend)

Sadly I have no pictures because, you know, that would make sense for a photographer to bring a camera to an event like this (oops). Thanks to everyone for coming out, I hope to see you again throughout the summer!

Greeny

Isn't this illustration pretty? I am starting to get excited for the SOWA season but also I found this image in today's SOWA newsletter particularly striking so I thought I would share. I love the greens!
