Back to the Blog - a Restart

yesterday morning at Cohasset Harbor. Ahhh...

It's been quiet over here, hasn't it? I guess having a baby will do that to a blog sometimes. Now that things are settling down on the home front (getting the hang of parenting, baby settling into a quasi-routine, the dog back up and walking), I've been thinking a lot about what I'd like things to look like going forward. One thing I definitely would like to get back into on a regular basis is blogging.

I love the communities that develop with blogs and how people within those communities can turn to each other for advice and inspiration. I've been using blogs for years to learn more about so many different topics - photography, eating clean, parenting, etc - and I would love it if I could help others do the same. Going forward I hope to cover a variety of things including:

-fitness photography: what I'm doing in my work and also featuring other photographers
-FitMomTalks: readers are loving this series and I'm excited to keep it going!
-my own fitness goals: I'm restarting my own personal fitness regimen and I would love to use this blog to help stay accountable
-ETC: parenting challenges, what I'm learning alone the way, South Shore living, *travel*... all the other things going on in life!

So how does that sound? Will you join me?

My Favorite Vitamins and a Giveaway! #TheGoodGummy

Even though I try to eat healthy on a regular basis, I'm still always looking out for ways to get more supplements in my diet (even more so for my husband who is not as into fruits and veggies as I am!). When we began talking about starting a family, one of the first things I did was start taking a pre-natal vitamin. The one I chose had all of the good stuff in it that you need - vitamin C, iron, etc - but I found that I had to take it with food (otherwise I felt queasy) and the after taste was not the best.
Then I found SmartyPants Vitamins. In addition to all of the features you look for in a pre-natal vitamin, these ones also have Omega 3 DHA and EPA fish oil for brain health (from sustainable small fish), folate for healthy nervous system development, and Vitamin K2 for calcium regulation and skeletal support.

At first glance, I was surprised when I saw the daily dosage was 6 vitamins per serving. Then I tasted them - they were delicious! Taking 6 per day would not be an issue (although restricting myself to 6 might be...). They are sweet and tangy which satisfied several cravings I've had throughout my pregnancy to boot. No yucky aftertaste AND you don't need to take them with food as there are no queasy side effects. Bonus.

Another bonus? I gave a sample of the Men's Complete vitamin to my husband...and he loved them. He immediately asked me to find out where I can get more. I was psyched to find not only the perfect pre-natal vitamin for myself but a daily vitamin that he would take (and enjoy) as well.

Have I talked them up enough? Here's your chance to win a 30 day supply of your own! Just enter below and a winner will be drawn at random on March 18. Can't wait? Purchase your gummies right on Amazon!

Let's try this again... #MarshfieldDuxburyTri this Sunday

biking in the rain can be fun, it turns out
After the wash-out that was the Cohasset Triathlon I was preparing for in June, I immediately signed up for the Marshfield-Duxbury Triathlon on August 2 which is now just a few short days away! Training has been trickier since the weather got pretty steamy in July but I have fit in a bunch of good runs, some even long (for me!). When it was too hot to run I did some bike rides along the shore with those ocean breezes keeping me going.

As for gear, I got a sweet new bike helmet-

and finally purchased my first tri suit which is currently en route from OneTri.com!

Never thought I'd be so psyched for such a thing but I am. It's the same brand I used for the Cohasset Tri which I'd rented (except this one has sleeves - no jellyfish stings this time). Still deciding on an outfit but I'll post it when I have it all squared away.
definitely wearing my New Balance kicks!
What are you training for this summer??

The New Studio

Here it is! My current set-up at the new studio in Cohasset. Lots of bright wooden beams and natural light. I just realized since this photo was taken I've set up a little make-up station in the corner and added a table and clothing rack too. A couch will be coming at some point and then we'll be all set! Ready to check it out in person? I'd love to have you over! :)

Fitness Photography: Personal Trainer Camilla

This shoot with personal trainer, Camilla Cantelli Mortensen, was so cool because she was totally open to the dramatic lighting and had the perfect look for it. The Pinterest board she created as inspiration for the shoot had a bunch of striking poses she wanted to try too. Check out these strong, lean photos of Camilla!

4 Boston Marathon Handmade Gift Ideas

The Boston Marathon is in 4 days and I could not be more excited to cheer on all 36,000 people running on Monday! With so many Boston Marathon themed items in shops all over the city and online, I wanted to highlight a few handmade goodies I've come across that were inspired by the infamous upcoming race-
This gorgeous 2014 Boston Marathon Print is by my friend Jenn of JHill Design which is part of her Sports Map series. Through April 31, get FREE personalization- just order the personalized print and use code RUN2014 at checkout. Include the year or the runner's time, runner's name and bib number.
Bev Feldman of Linkouture designed this lovely chaimaille bracelet complete with handmade runner charm. Bonus- she's donating 20% of sales of the bracelet to the One Fund!
I discovered this print in a blog post by the designer, Lindsay of Warren Tales, that said she was inspired by my Boston Marathon photo project- I was so flattered! I love the fun font and concept of this marathon route print which she is offering as a 9x16" and as notecards.
Running the marathon? Stop by Old South Church on Boylston Street and get a handmade scarf! The Old South Knitters group started a Marathon Scarf Project this year asking knitters to donate handmade scarves in the BAA yellow and blue for the athletes. As they said on their website, "In this year of Remembrance and Hope, our vision is to wrap each runner in the love poured into stitches of handmade blue and yellow scarves. We promise to wrap runners in your love until all your scarves are distributed."

What are your favorite Boston Marathon finds?

Fitness and Dance Photography: Move Sweat Love with Ali

Here's Ali! You may remember her from a shoot I did last year outside on the Greenway. This year she wanted something different so we took it inside and got these fitness and dance portraits (that I particularly love in black & white!). Styled by b.fetching, hair & make-up by Jordan Wells:

Thanks again, Ali! You're a rockstar! See you in class :)

Hey Boston lovers! Need a quick and easy holiday gift this year? Look no further! I'm doing another desk calendar featuring 12 months of scenes in and around the Boston area, from Fenway Park to the Zakim Bridge. It even comes packaged in its own case which doubles as a stand-

At 4x6" it's the ultimate stocking stuffer! I'm currently offering these babies online for pre-order and they should be ready to ship by next week. They will also be available at the pop-up store Boston Handmade Holiday Gallery in Brookline Village as well as Cristina Hurley Gallery in Canton.

Yoga and Dance Photography in Boston: Erica Bornstein

I started a wish list on Pinterest of yoga poses I thought were cool and would love to shoot someday. Without even knowing this, yoga and Zumba instructor Erica (who teaches at Sweat & Soul Yoga, Back Bay Yoga, and Soul.Train) showed up to our shoot and nailed most of them! This girl has some serious skills, both on a yoga mat and in the dance studio:

Thanks again Erica, you were a pleasure to work with!!!

Fitness Photography: Personal Trainer Dan

When I met Equinox personal trainer Dan, he had been training hard. His girlfriend, Laura, had given him a challenge- to step outside his comfort zone. Dan did this by signing up for a Tough Mudder, and following all of the advice he gives to his clients- eating consciously, and increasing his workout intensity. In the end he wound up losing 10% body fat in 12 weeks and Laura added a bonus- a photo shoot to document the result of all of his dedication and hard work. I was honored to capture Dan's progress in these photos:

And of course we had to get a shot of Laura too-

Thanks again Dan and congrats on reaching your fitness goals!

Birthday Recap: Urban Raid Boston

I think birthdays are special and should always be celebrated in some way, big or small. I always try to plan something for mine, even if it is just a quiet night out with friends or dinner with the family. This year I decided to try something a little different and definitely outside of my comfort zone- I scraped together a team (which actually turned into two teams) to compete in the Urban Raid, a 5k obstacle course set in the Government Center/Faneuil Hall/Waterfront areas of Boston.

We were all a little nervous about actually finishing- none of us have a lot (or any) experience with these kind of races- but I'm happy to say we all crossed the finish line AND had times that we were impressed with. Combined with gorgeous weather and an afterparty at Ned Devine's with Shipyard Brewing Company (we earned those beers!), I really couldn't have asked for a better birthday celebration. We're already looking forward to next year!
Thanks to SurThrival for the action shots throughout the race and getting this one with me and my brother!

Fitness in Boston: Free Zumba at City Hall Plaza

Here's another free class series to add to your schedule! The Z-Spot, Boston's first Zumbaยฎ studio, is offering free classes at City Hall Plaza. In conjunction with the Boston Moves for Health initiative and Mayor Menino's Fitness in the City series, the Z-Spot crew will be leading hour-long classes starting at 6:30pm on Mondays all summer long.

But it doesn't seem totally accurate to call it a class- it's a scene. From twenty-somethings in workout gear to curious tourists, the crowd is a diverse bunch and includes people of all ages and backgrounds. It even draws an audience-
It's definitely a workout but I've never spent an entire workout laughing like I do during Z-Spot classes. They just have this energy that's infectious and you really can't help but have a good time. New to Zumba? Seasoned veteran? Z-Spot welcomes participants of all levels and abilities. For more information, check out their website and Facebook page. Have fun! :)
