Fitness in Boston: Summer Started with a Bang!

Whew! It's been a while since I blogged- summer started fast and furious, I've just been trying to keep up! Here's a little glimpse of what I've been up to-

A few fantastic photo shoots with some seriously beautiful ladies-

Danielle Roback, owner of Studio Poise
Christine Sordillo, fitness competitor
Joanna Benevides, yoga beauty
and even a fun test shoot with my pal Ali Baldassare of Move Sweat Love and make-up artist Sadie Higgins.

I also had a major shoot in collaboration with patientMoon at Vo2max Fitness and Vo2max Elite in Needham (photos are not up yet- stay tuned!). We were shooting not only their studios but all 20+ instructors and it was a blast! I loved working with these fitness stars, they were total pros. More on that in another post...
I also spent a day at the 2nd Annual NEWBHA Fest run by the North End Health and Beauty Alliance where I was also photographing the event - lots of bands, free fitness classes, and health and beauty vendors. It was a gorgeous day to spend outside!

On top of all this (which took place in the span of one month) I've also had some exciting personal developments occur! That is another blog post entirely so stay tuned... :)

How have you been spending your summer so far??

Fitness in Boston: Hot BalletFIT at DanceFIT Studio

Even though I had never set foot in the studio before last weekend, I'd been a fan of DanceFIT Studio for a while. Last spring I participated in their 6FIT program (which I loved) so I became familiar with the classes they teach virtually through Skype. They teach the same classes and more in their studios located in Brookline and Natick and last Sunday I was at the Natick studio for a special blogger event. We were there to try a new class owner Gina Fay has started offering- a hot version of the popular BalletFit class.

BalletFIT is like a barre class with a lot of traditional ballet moves mixed in. When I took the online classes, BalletFIT was my favorite- it always made me feel graceful, toned, and strong (which is probably not how I looked!). I've never taken a hot version of any class so I was a little nervous but obviously up for the challenge.

One thing I like about Gina's classes is the emphasis she puts on warm-ups and cool-downs. There is a lot of stretching involved so when you're doing the hard stuff, you feel ready for it! Even if it's a tough class, the cool-down stretch is so relaxing- such a nice way to end the hour. I thought the hot element would be a distraction from what I was doing but it really wasn't and I felt even more limber than normal. We had two short water breaks which were much-needed; I went through about 20 oz of water in an hour.

While I felt great during and immediately after the class, I was really sore for the next few days, especially in my calves! The pain was worth it though and I'd definitely recommend Hot BalletFIT if you're looking to trying something new and challenging but also fun (jumping is fun, right??).

Have you tried any hot fitness classes before? What did you think?

Fitness and Dance Photography: Move Sweat Love with Ali

Here's Ali! You may remember her from a shoot I did last year outside on the Greenway. This year she wanted something different so we took it inside and got these fitness and dance portraits (that I particularly love in black & white!). Styled by b.fetching, hair & make-up by Jordan Wells:

Thanks again, Ali! You're a rockstar! See you in class :)

Yoga and Dance Photography in Boston: Erica Bornstein

I started a wish list on Pinterest of yoga poses I thought were cool and would love to shoot someday. Without even knowing this, yoga and Zumba instructor Erica (who teaches at Sweat & Soul Yoga, Back Bay Yoga, and Soul.Train) showed up to our shoot and nailed most of them! This girl has some serious skills, both on a yoga mat and in the dance studio:

Thanks again Erica, you were a pleasure to work with!!!

Dance Photography Workshop with Lois Greenfield

In April, I had the honor of attending a weekend-long workshop with world-renown dance photographer, Lois Greenfield, at her studio in NYC. Lois has worked with many dance companies over there years and has perfected the art of shooting dancers doing what they do best. During the workshop, we were each given about 15 minutes with one or two dancers- coming up with a short routine, finding the right costumes, and the shooting it! Here are a few I captured during my time behind the camera (all photos Β©Lucie Wicker/Lois Greenfield Workshop 2013)
